Pediatric clinical research studies add crucial insight to the specialized regulatory dosing and therapeutic approaches required for children. ERG’s pediatric experts understand the nuances of these FDA-mandated pediatric/adolescent trials, which, as a sub-specialty of adult trials, require both different protocols and different techniques. Our pediatric-focused sites are prepared to accelerate your pediatric/adolescent studies.

Studies from First-in-Man Through Phase IV

While both are considered “pediatric clinical research trials,” conducting clinical research in infants is far different than in adolescents. ERG has demonstrated expertise in both, with highly trained personnel and custom-built clinical sites to support and speed your trial.

Industry-Leading Pediatric Expertise

At ERG, pediatric clinical studies are led by principal investigators with experience in hundreds of clinical trials. Our medical team includes child and adolescent psychiatrists, pediatricians, pediatric neurologists who are all board-certified; as well as a board-certified family practitioner also boarded in pain and addiction. As part of the Duke Clinical Research Institute pediatric group, Dr. Sarah D. Atkinson worked on the K-SADS validation during her residency. Our experienced staff consists of registered nurses, licensed practical nurses, patient care technicians, nutritionists, certified rehabilitation counselors, neuropsychiatric raters, phlebotomists, and regulatory, quality control and ACLS-certified staff. Our staff are highly trained in serial PK collection within the pediatric population.

Customized Resources for Pediatric Clinical Research

Our purpose-built centers for pediatric clinical research are designed for the comfort of both patients and their families during short-term and long-term studies. Two beds per room means there is always space for caregivers; separate exam and procedure rooms reduce patient anxiety; and catered meals enable us to meet both study requirements and the tastes of picky young eaters.

“We are moving medicine forward—literally trying to take a new treatment for OCD from the chemist’s shelf to the pharmacy shelf.”
— Sarah D. Atkinson, MD, Finger Lakes Clinical Research

Approaches to Patient Recruitment and Retention

Recruiting pediatric patients isn’t as simple as attracting some other groups, so we harness our expertise in recruiting specialized populations, as well as tapping into the large private practices of our network pediatricians. Yet rapid, complete enrollment is only the beginning. Our robust retention program is designed to please children of all ages—and their parents. Scheduled recreational activities—crafts and athletics in both indoor gymnasiums and secure outdoor areas—are balanced with tutoring that helps students stay abreast of their schoolwork. Air hockey tables, video games, and on-demand movies help keep children engaged and entertained.
